Elmhurst Cool Cities

Last Public Hearing on Electric Aggregation is May 7

Community Choice Aggregation

While price is something we all value, rarely is a purchasing decision made based on price alone. Consumers buy what they consider to be the best value.

Elmhurst residents can vocalize what they believe is the best value in electricity in the last of two electric aggregation public hearings on Monday, May 7, 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

An electric aggregation referendum was passed on March 20 authorizing the city to negotiate electric rates.

The May 7 hearing allows the public to comment on the city’s draft Plan of Operation and Governance for its municipal electric aggregation program.

Here's coverage in the Independent from the first meeting, held April 23:
Civic groups urge city aggregation to buy 100% renewable energy.

A copy of the proposed plan is also available for review at City Hall during regular business hours. All persons present at the Public Hearing will be given an opportunity to be heard.

Elmhurst College's Recycling Day A Huge Success

recycling-day 300

Vehicles were lined up for blocks on Saturday for Elmhurst College's annual recycling event, and this year's haul was a record.

Dozens of volunteers, most of them students from Elmhurst College, processed the contents of each car, minivan and truck after guiding them into the correct lines for donation.

Bicycles, wheelchairs, sewing machines, typewriters, vacuum cleaners, household appliances, baby items, batteries, light bulbs, and especially electronics, were dropped off by the carload. A special paper-shredding area, a partnership with DuPage County, also saw steady traffic.

VOTE PASSES: City Gets Green Light to Shop for Power

Elmhurst residents favored a proposal to allow the city to shop for electrical power on their behalf, by a margin of 5,300 to 2,767, the Elmhurst Patch reported.

Approval of the March 20 referendum means the city will be able to negotiate for electrical power with suppliers on behalf of residential customers and small retail customers, without asking each customer individually.

Group buying is expected to result in lower electrical bills for consumers, although there is no guarantee.

Suburban roundup: Voters come out strong for electricity choice

Chicago Tribune reporters

March 21, 2012

A significant majority of nearly 300 municipalities and counties approved referendum measures Tuesday that will allow officials to negotiate electricity rates with alternative suppliers in behalf of their residents.

The process, known as electrical aggregation, is intended to let local governments obtain market rates that currently are lower than those offered in the Chicago area by Commonwealth Edison Co. and downstate by supplier
Ameren Illinois.  Go here to read the rest of this story.

Voters in many suburbs might trim their electric bills

Ballot measures would allow towns to buy power in from alternative suppliers

By Robert McCoppin, Chicago Tribune reporter
Rare is the ballot-box initiative that could actually save taxpayers money.

But in Tuesday's primary election, voters in nearly 300 communities and counties across Illinois will be asked to authorize their local leaders to buy electricity in bulk from suppliers other than Commonwealth Edison Co. and downstate utility company Ameren Illinois. That, by the most conservative estimate, could shave $10 to $12 from the average monthly power bill, at least in the first year.

We Caught You Doing Something Cool: Flight 112 Wine House

If you didn’t do your homework beforehand, you could walk into Flight 112 thinking it is a run-of-the-mill wine bar. But this organic wine bar is more than what meets the eye … or palate.flightsmall

Seventy percent of the wine served at Flight 112 Wine House falls under the categories of sustainable, organic or biodynamic.

“Taste and quality matter most,” says owner Visal Kheam. “No one wants to drink a ‘green’ wine if it doesn’t taste good.

"It makes my work more difficult, trying to filter out only organic wine, but that makes it all the more interesting. Over time, I’ve come to realize that organic wines are earthier, with less fruits on the palate. They go better with food. Organic wine makes a great story," Kheam says.
